How efficient is drive-in racking when used in cold storage?

In the cold storage environment, due to the low temperature, high energy consumption and special working conditions, the selection of shelves is of vital importance. Drive-in racking is one of the commonly used dense storage shelves in cold storage. Drive-in racking is a high-density storage system. Forklifts can directly enter the racking aisles to store and retrieve goods, making it suitable for storing large quantities of goods with few varieties. How efficient is drive-in rackingwhen used in cold storage?

The construction and operation costs of cold storage are relatively high, so the space utilization rate is the key. Drive-in racking uses a push-back storage method, eliminating the need to reserve forklift aisles. Its storage density is 30% to 50% higher than that of beam-type racking, making it particularly suitable for storing large quantities of the same type of goods such as frozen foods, medicines, and dairy products.

The access method of drive-in racking is the last-in, Last-Out (FILO), meaning that the last stored goods are retrieved first. This model is suitable for goods with a low turnover rate, such as seasonal reserves or long-term frozen products. However, if the goods turnover is frequent, frequent entry into forklifts may lead to a decline in efficiency. Therefore, it is more suitable for low-frequency and large-volume cold storage scenarios. Therefore, if the cold storage has a high requirement for efficiency, semi-automatic shuttle car racks or gravity racks can be chosen. These two types are also dense storage racks, with higher efficiency than drive-in racks and are widely used in cold storage.
